  • Ensure the cable or circuit is isolated and disconnected from any live power or active equipment

  • OLTS and OTDR tests can be performed with commercial network testers, which are specifically designed to test the continuity of your fiber optic cable.
  • Note and record the results for each line/section of your cable.

How to Test Cable Continuity with Multimeters

First, you must ensure the safety of the test cable continuity by making sure the cable is de-energized, or not connected to any live power. Set the multimeter to continuity mode (symbol: sound wave/diode) or the lowest resistance range. Place one probe at one end of the cable and the other probe at the opposite end. Your tester should produce a beep and show a reading of <1 or 0 resistance if your cable is continuous. However, a reading of high or infinite resistance means there are faults, breaks, or shorts in your cable that are causing interruptions in the line. Repeat this process for all conductors, making sure that you are labelling each line/point and recording the results as you go.
